Abstract

There  was  guiding  program  on handicraft  industry  for  craftsmen   at Penguin,  Kulonprogo   Regency.   The  goal  of  the  elucidation   of  handicraft development   was  to  increase   the  quality  of  handicraft   design   in  order  to make  it more  competitive   in the market.  The guiding  program  aimed  to de velop the craftsmen's   knowledge   and skill to be able to create  their  own de sign. This would  make  them  not rely only on customers  who had the design. The guiding  program  also  gave  insight of how to manage  the handicraft   in dustry that covered  human  resources  management,  production,   product  mar keting, and the other process  in the industry. The  guiding  program   used  lecturing  method  given  to the  craftsmenPengasih pendopo   (the audience  hall of the sub-district)  which  was attended by the sub-district   officials  and  19 craftsmen  from  four types  of the handi craft industry:  rope-craft,  coconut-fiber-craft,   bamboo-craft,   and wood  carv ing. After  lecturing,  tutors  team  gave design models  of handicraft  to add de sign varieties  in order  to train  the craftsmen  in creativity.  This  plain  training would be evaluated  and  criticized  by the tutors to make  it a continued   pro cess. The product  of handicrafts   involved:  crafts  made  of coconut-fiber    such  asdoormat  and  brooms;   crafts  made  of rope  used  agel,  rami,  mendong,   and enceng  gondok   material:   bags  and  cases;  crafts  made  of  bamboo   such  as furniture  and bird- cages;  and wood carving. The entire product  was resulted from mariual work with plain design. To product handicrafts  is a side job  for the men whose  main jobs  are farmers.  They use their free time while  waiting harvest for making  the handicrafts.Key word: the development   of handicrafts   design

Abstract

The target of implementing a public service program was giving themanagement and teaching staffs of taman pendidikan Al-Qur'an (TPA) and taman kanak-kanak Al-Qur'an  (TKA), schools for elementary school and kindergarten students' education in the Al-Quran,  knowledge of and insight in applying computer technology in conducting the teaching-learning process and improving their skills and abilities in operating computer-assisted program packages of education in the Al-Qur'an.The methods  used  in the activities of the public service programwere, among others,  lectures,  discussions, question-and-answer sessions, demonstrations, and practice, the activities being essentially training activi ties enabling participants to acquire knowledge and skills. The training ma terials delivered were related to the topics of introduction to computer ope ration based on the Windows system of operation, the program package of the Holy Qur'an, and Islamic children's education. The training activities have resulted in the TPA and TKA manage ment and teaching staffs participating in the activities becoming better in their knowledge of  and  insight  in applying computer technology  in  the course of improving the quality of the teaching-learning process of readingthe Al-Qur'an and writing texts taken from it in the educational institutions where they work. They have indeed been greatly in need of the training ma terials. Their  skills  and abilities  in operating computer-assisted program packages of education in the Al-Qur'an have also become better than those possessed before participating in the training. Evaluation on the results of the public service program  indicates that on the average the participants' knowledge and skills have risen from 34.44% into 78.66%, which implies an increase of 44.22%.Keywords: computer technology, reading and writing texts taken/rom   theAl-Qur'an

Abstract

A voucher program of manufacturing a static hole-making  wood- .chiseling machine for small-scale industrial companies producing wooden furniture was conducted with the objective of increasing the productivity of the wooden furniture production company of Indah Jaya in especially mak ing holes for joint construction in the furniture produced. Another objective was to determine the capacity and productivity of the machine itself. The program was conducted through the stages of planning the ma chine, manufacturing it, and training company workers in operating it. The planning stage covered the steps of drafting a design of the machine, calcu lating the materials for its manufacture, and estimating the cost of the manu facture. The manufacturing stage covered the steps of cutting the materials according to the design in the draft, welding some parts together, assem bling all the components into a unit, installing electrical appliances in it, testing its performance in operation, and painting it. The training stage co vered the steps of delivering a lecture on its theoretical aspects, demonstrat ing its operation, and giving company workers practice in operating it.The program has resulted in the actualization of a static hole-makingwood-chiseling machine and in company workers'  acquisition of skills in operating it. With a round iron frame 10 em in diameter combined with a wooden frame 6 cm by 12 ern in size, making it 120 ern by 100 em by 50 em in its dimensions, and powered by an SEM electrical motor generator of12HP and rotation speed of 2800 RPM, in its performance and productivity at making holes of the same form and size in wood the machine has been five to eight times faster than manual tools. Keywords: hole-making  machine, small-scale woodfurniture  industry

Abstract

A group  called  SARILA  in Kauman,  Dadapayu,   Semanu,  Gunung kidul,  had  a problem  of low production   quality  and  capacity  in their  busi ness  of making  patilo  and  fried  cassava  chips  because  the  work  of cutting and scraping  the basic  material  for their products,  cassava,  was done manu ally by using  simple  tools that caused  the cassava  to break  when  cut so that the  resulting   chips  were  also  in  broken  conditions   and  the  manual  work caused the workers  to quickly become  exhausted.  Therefore,  the main objec tive of one voucher  program  was to enable the workers  to do their work me chanically  instead  of manually. It had  to be able  to design  and  produce  an easily-operated   cassava processing  machine  with a frame strong  enough  to withstand  vibrations  and do two kinds  of work,  cutting  and scraping  cassava,  easily,  accurately,  and simultaneously.    An  ergonomic   table  also  had  to  be  developed   to  ensure long-lasting   use  of the machine  in the  cassava  processing.   The  machine  at last successfully  produced  is 90 em in length,  60 em in width,  and 90 em in height,  designed  high enough  to enable the operator  to do the work easily in a standing-up  position.  Stainless  steel  plate  material  is applied  on all parts having direct  contact  with the cassava  processing.  The frame of the machine is made of 5-cm rectangular  steel profiles  to ensure  its being  strong  enough to withstand  operation.  An electrical  motor  with  a power  of  Y2  HP and pul ley-and-belt  transmission   aids the operation.   Such  transmission   enables  the cutting  and scraping  parts to operate  simultaneously   at different  speeds. The position  of the cutting tool can be adjusted  for desired  thickness.  Except the frame, all parts of the machine  are designed  according  to a knock-down  sys tem for easy replacement  of broken parts. The  result  of a performance   test  on the  machine  has  shown  that  itcan  be  operated   easily  without  the  operator   becoming   quickly  exhausted. Compared  to what is produced  in the old ways, the product  looks better; it is smoother,  and there  is less cassava  fibers.  The   product  capacity  of the ma chine  is about  50 kg every  50 minutes  from  its cutting  process  and  50 kg every  75 minutes  from  its scraping  process.  During  operation,   there  is no vibration on its frame. It shows that the construction design is strong enough to withstand the vibration of the motor rotation and cassava processing. Keywords: cassava, multipurpose machine, cutting and scraping
